The first step for getting rid of mold is to air out your house.

2 If you have power, turn on your air conditioner, a dehumidifier, and/or every fan you own. Keep your windows closed if you have a dehumidifier and an air conditioner to help the air circulate inside and get rid of excess moisture. Keep your windows open if you have only fans, and face the exhaust toward an open window.

If you don’t have power but you own a portable generator, use it so that you can follow the strategy above. Just remember that generators emit deadly carbon monoxide; to avert carbon monoxide poisoning, never run a generator indoors.

No power at all? If weather permits, open all your windows and doors to create airflow.

3. Monitor the Moisture
While you’re airing out your home, use a humidity meter, around $15 at hardware stores, to keep tabs on the moisture level. Aim for between 30 and 50 percent humidity to inhibit mold growth, the EPA advises [PDF].

Floors, walls, and furniture may be dry to the touch and still harbor mold and bacterial growth. A moisture meter, $50 at hardware stores, is another good tool to have, so you can detect dampness you can’t see.

4. Remove Debris
Before you get rid of contaminated debris, be sure to put on your respirator and other protective gear.

If you have flood insurance, call your insurance company about the documentation you need to back up your claim. You may need to save pieces of carpet, flooring, and walls, and take photos of the extent of the damage. The Insurance Information Institute says some insurers may want to view your property remotely via video chat or even use drone footage to assess damage to your entire neighborhood.

If any household items, such as pieces of furniture or carpeting, have been damaged and you can’t clean and dry them within 24 to 48 hours of your house being flooded, discard them, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends. Chances are these items already harbor mold and can’t be saved. If there’s any item of value that has to be discarded, take a photo of it for your insurance claim.

Ask your town’s sanitation department about how to dispose of household items from your cleanup.

5. Remove Damaged Drywall
If the drywall in your home has more than 10 square feet total of water damage, the EPA recommends hiring a contractor with experience handling water damage to remove it. Any area smaller than that, however, you can deal with yourself. You’ll want to cut the drywall 15 to 24 inches above the visible water line.

“Take a utility knife, score the drywall, then punch it in,” Bishop says. Check with your local sanitation department to see whether you need to take the drywall to a dump yourself, or if you can just pile it up on your curb for trash pickup.

Then, if the insulation behind the drywall is damp, you’ll need to remove that, too. Nonporous materials, such as metal and glass, can simply be cleaned thoroughly with water and detergent and sanitized with a bleach and water solution. The CDC recommends 1 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water to remove mold on hard surfaces.

Don’t seal any walls up with new insulation and drywall until everything is completely dry.

6. Remove Flooring
Even if they appear dry, ceramic tile, sheet vinyl, laminate, and solid wood floors should be removed because moisture and silt collects underneath them—and cause bacteria or mold to grow.

Once you discard these, ensure that everything is clean and dry before installing new flooring. Maintain your home’s humidity at 30 to 50 percent, and use a moisture meter to check that subflooring is at or below 16 percent moisture content before installing new flooring (for wood floors, manufacturers advise that the subfloor’s moisture content should be 13 percent or less). Be patient—it might take a few weeks for your flooring to return to reasonable moisture content, Bishop says.

If you’re unsure when you can reinstall flooring, the EPA recommends that you consult with a contractor or home inspector who has experience with flooding (see above).

Maybe you’re thinking about doing the work yourself. If you’re a trained and experienced contractor, a DIY restoration is an okay idea. But if you’re an average Joe, even with a good bit of restoration knowledge, it is likely in your best interest to call in a restoration company. A restoration company is essential for most restoration projects around the home, including, but not limited to, broken water pipe repair, drain cleaning, and more.

We Help to Identity Problems

Restoration tasks can be difficult, particularly when you’re not entirely sure what the problem even is. You may not always be able to identify the problems at hand, but we have a great deal of experience locating the source of an issue and presenting a diagnosis that will get your home back in excellent condition. On the flip-side, if you call a restoration company, they will be able to identify all the problems you have with your home and rectify them efficiently so they don’t occur again.

Do the Work Professionally So Future Problems Don’t Arise

How would you feel if you spent all the effort to do restoration work yourself, only to have problems arise with the work in just a few months? Not only will you have wasted your time and energy, but you will still have to deal with the frustration of fixing things all over again. A professional restoration company will do the job with efficiency the first time so that problems are less likely to arise in the future.

Deal with Insurance

Insurance sure is a hassle, isn’t it? You have to fill out endless forms and make multiple calls to handle your claims. Well, a restoration company can help you deal with the insurance aspect of your situation and help you to take the necessary steps to file your claim.

Fully Licensed and Insured

For complex restoration tasks like water pipe repair, the job requires expertise to complete it safely and efficiently. A restoration company is fully trained and licensed to carry out the tasks that they do, and they are fully insured in case anything does go wrong.

Compliant with Safety Standards

For many restoration tasks there is an element of danger involved. You don’t want to take the risks, which is why it’s a good idea to call a professional restoration company. Experienced pros will do the job carefully and in full compliance with all safety standards.

Deal with Emergency Situations

Sometimes you may have an emergency plumbing situation that you can’t handle alone but that requires immediate attention. In this case, a restoration company can come to your home or business and help you with this situation, and they can advise you over the phone what you can do until they arrive. An emergency situation is always stressful, but a restoration company who offers a 24-hour emergency service can take much of this stress away.

Here at Scavello Restoration, we are a professional restoration company who offer a wide range of restoration services. We are especially proud of our full-service plumbing options, where our experienced plumbing professionals can perform a wide range of plumbing services, including broken water pipe repair, drain backup, toilet backup, drain cleaning, fixing a dripping faucet, and more.

Collegeville PA Water Damage Remediation Flooding Water Damage Cleanup Avoid Water Damage: Call A Plumber

Why contact a plumber? . Not many people are aware that water can damage your property because of something as simple as a broken pipe. So if you notice that your pipes installation is not working properly, or if you see that the walls in your house are leaky and wet, call a plumber in your area from Philadelphia, Bluebell, Morristown, Phoenixville, Pottstown PA. <ins class="yst-diff">Emergency plumbers can help address these urgent issues quickly before serious damage occurs.</ins>

A plumber can identify the source of water leakage and it can create a plan to stop water from pouring in your house. Faulty pipes are one of the most common reasons why people’s properties get flooded. So whenever you see that your sink is no longer draining water as it should, contact the plumber. You should also call the plumber when you notice any bathroom installation not working properly.

The worst part about malfunctioning pipes is that, if you live in a block of flats, you risk inundating not only your home, but your neighbor’s apartments as well.

A plumber is responsible with (and should be an expert in) installing, maintaining, and repairing pipes.

Upon contacting a plumber, there are several things you should have handy: the layout of your home’s plumbing system, any specifications about modifications in the plumbing system, and the problem you’ve encountered (the reason you called the plumber): faulty pipe, broken pipe, clogged sink, clogged toilet, and so on.

Professional plumbers will work closely with other experts to ensure the successful completion of every project. When working on a plumbing project, the plumber will have to keep an eye on the building codes, relevant legislation, and installation requirements.

People whose properties are damaged in accidents or natural disasters are put to life’s test. This is why the process of home restoration is very demanding, both physically and psychologically. One thing you can do to ease the home restoration process in Collegeville PA, Devon PA, Exton PA, Gilbertsville PA, Harleysville PA, Malvern PA, Phoenixville PA, Pottstown PA, Reading PA is to have the peace of mind that you are collaborating with a professional company.

How can you know that you hired the right professional?

First of all, a good indicator that you are working with the right home restoration company is the fact that they offer initial assistance in the recovery process. A lot of people get confused as to the things they need to do first in the recovery process. A professional home restoration agency will advise on contacting your insurance agency before taking any step further.

It is important to follow to correct and complete steps of a proper restoration. The restoration company you choose to hire in Collegeville PA, Devon PA, Exton PA, Gilbertsville PA, Harleysville PA, Malvern PA, Phoenixville PA, Pottstown PA, Reading PA should have employees with current training, safety and health certifications.

In addition to that, they should have – and offer – insurance information. Do not work with a company that doesn’t have clear contracts, proper licenses, and a vast amount of experience.

You need to understand that it is vital to take action immediately after the fire damage, smoke damage, or flood damage has affected your home. Even though you may be in shock and not know what to do, keep in mind that there may be goods in your home that can be salvaged if you act in a timely manner.

For example, in case of home restoration after smoke damage or fire damage, the items that have not been affected by fire will discolor to a yellow hue.
